Yusupov Palace, St Petersburg

Located on the Moika River in St Petersburg stands Yusupov Palace, also known as Moika Palace. Built by 1770 by Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe who was a French architect. Yusupov Palace has seen one of the most dramatic episodes in Russia’s history being the location for the murder of Grigory Rasputin in 1916. The Russian Revolution followed shortly after his death, and in 1925 was handed over to the city’s Education Commissariat who decided to preserve the mansion as a public museum. The Rasputin exhibition can be visited only with a pre-arranged tour.

Over the years numerous well-known architects worked on the palace, and it is known for the hodgepodge of architectural styles. The courtyard where Rasputin attempted to flee from his killers is now occupied by a kindergarten playground adjacent to the palace!

Kazan Cathedral, St Petersburg

The Kazan Cathedral finished construction in 1811 by architect Andrei Voronikhin after over 10 years of work on it. This Russian Cathedral is an impressive landmark located in the heart of the Nevsky Prospekt. With a breathtaking scale that leads to draw every eye, and surrounded by a beautiful small garden with fountain. Inspired originally by Basilica of St Peters in Rome and built as an Orthodox church. After Napoleon was defeated in 1812, the great Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov who was played a vital role in the victory is buried within Kazan Cathedral.

The Bolsheviks closed the cathedral from 1929 until 1932 while it was renovated. During this time it contained the Museum for “History of Religion and Atheism”, which demonstrated much religious art and served for aid to the anti-religious propaganda which was rife at the time. See A Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov for a true introspective on how Russian culture viewed religion during this period.

Inside the Cathedral features many columns and an outward colonnadem which is an impressive 69 metres long and 62 metres high. It also still contains numerous sculptures and icons executed by the best Russian artists from that period. The wrought iron grille used to partition the Catherdral is sometimes cited as one of the finest ever created.

Known as Kazanskiy Kafedralniy Sobor or in native Russian Каза́нский кафедра́льный собо́р.
