Bank of England, London
The Bank of England is the main bank for the United Kingdom. It was established in 1694 to act as the English Government’s banker and still is to this day. The Bank has a monopoly on the issue of banknotes in England and Wales. Sir John Soane employed in 1788 as ‘Architect and Surveyor’ by the Bank. He worked at the Bank for 45 years until retiring in 1833 when he described it as ‘…a situation which has long been the pride and boast of my life’. The structure of remained untouched until it was demolished and a new building erected by the architect Herbert Baker between the two World Wars.

The Bank’s headquarters has been located in London’s main financial district, the City of London, on Threadneedle Street, since 1734. It is sometimes known by the metonym The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street or simply The Old Lady.
